Look out for the Mercat Cross (market cross) marks on the high street’s ground, marking the markets held on High Street. The Marcat Cross was a structure marking the right to hold markets in Maybole. The right was given when Maybole was granted Burgh of Barony status in 1516.
The original Mercat Cross remains can be seen on the Castle grounds and date from 1707; it had to be removed from the High Street in 1773 due to traffic congestion.
